Description
Meldonium (Mildronate) – whatever you do with Meldonium, you will do it many times better!
Chemical Composition
Meldonium, also known as Mildronate, is a synthetic analog of gamma-butyrobetaine. It is a white crystalline powder, soluble in water and various organic solvents.
Mechanism of Action
Pharmacodynamics: Meldonium acts as a cytoprotective and cardioprotective agent. It inhibits gamma-butyrobetaine hydroxylase and reduces the synthesis of carnitine, thereby decreasing the transport of long-chain fatty acids across mitochondrial membranes. This leads to a shift in cellular energy metabolism from fatty acid oxidation to glycolysis.
Pharmacokinetics: Meldonium is rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations occur within 1-2 hours. It is predominantly excreted unchanged in urine. The half-life is approximately 4-6 hours.
Indications for Use
Meldonium is indicated for:
- Treatment of cardiac disorders such as angina, myocardial infarction, and chronic heart failure.
- Reduction of physical and mental stress.
- Treatment of cerebrovascular disorders.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to meldonium or any of its components.
- Severe hepatic impairment.
- Pregnancy and lactation.
- Patients under 18 years of age.
Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Tachycardia and arrhythmia.
- Changes in blood pressure.
- Headache, dizziness.
- Dyspepsia, nausea.
- Allergic reactions (rare).
Dosage and Administration
- For cardiac conditions: 500-1000 mg per day, divided into two doses.
- For cerebrovascular disorders: 500 mg per day.
- Treatment duration typically ranges from 4 to 6 weeks.
